Matera, 2019 European Capital of Culture

Matera, the ancestral appeal of
the 2019 European Capital of Culture
A unique town where people have been living since the prehistoric times.
After Carlo Levi's report about the living condition in the "sassi" in 1945, the Italian state decided to intervene by building a new neighbourhood. For the next twenty years those who lived in the caves moved to the new buildings.
In more recent times the "sassi" have been partly restored and made available again for living and tourism. And nowadays Matera is a vital place and a must-see for those visiting the South of Italy.
